Due
to the “softening” effect of the Gulf Stream on the
weather patterns of the Kenmare Bay, the region is known for its
spectacular flora. All around the bay there are pockets of native
oak forests and hazel wood scrub. Many foreign sub-tropical and
exotic species flourish around the bay. The arbutus or “strawberry
tree” grows wild in the area. Rhododendron from the Himalayas
and China introduced by the landlords is now threatening native
forests it is growing and colonizing so well. The largest Eucalyptus
tree in Europe is growing on a small Island garden off the village
of Sneem on the north side of the bay.
Derreen
Gardens on the Beara contains one of the largest collections of
Rhododendrons in Europe and an amazing glade full of giant tree
ferns which are natives of New Zealand. Fuchsia an introduced flowering
shrub species from Chile colours the roadsides red during the summer
months. Montbretia, a native of South Africa adds its orange to
the roadside kaleidoscope of colours. As a backdrop to these exotics
are native flowers such as primroses, bluebells, sea pink, foxgloves
and wild roses.
